Personal information

Graduation from Wageningen University in 1974 (MSc). PhD study on the effects of temperature and nitrogen supply on post-floral growth of wheat. Research in different position on seed germination, seed storage and genetic conservation; crop rotation studies, root growth, water relations and photosynthesis in potato, the nitrogen economy of plants and crops and nutrient cycling at the level of cropping systems. Objectives include to contribute to better management of abiotic resources and the prevention of nutrient losses from agricultural systems. Insight in genetic variation in response to abiotic factors is relevant to plant breeding. The research also aims at contributing to the construction of better models of the development of plants and crops, specifically with regard to the responses to abiotic factors. Since 2001, functional-stuctural plant modelling (making ‘virtual plants’) has been a joint activity with colleagues from the Plant Sciences Group - WUR and from INRA Thiverval-Grignon (F). Dedicated modelling tools are developed in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Winfried Kurth et al., Chair for Computer Graphics and Ecological Informatics, Georg-August University of Göttingen (D).

Teaching activities involve supervision of PhD and MSc projects and contributions to BSc and MSc courses on growth and development of crop plants in relation to abiotic factors and to a course on analysis of cropping systems.
