Postdoc at Centre for Crop Systems Analysis
Job description
As a postdoc I support modeling work, I coordinate the course “Designing climate robust cropping systems” and teach in this course, I co-supervise students and do research. Before that I was active in GIS and spatial statistics, four years as a PhD student and two years as a postdoc.
Research
I am actively working on the following topics:
-
Crop models: ORYZA (rice), APSIM (whole range of crops)
-
Weather extremes in dutch agriculture (potato, sugarbeet, …)
-
Rice phenology calibration
-
Biochar, aerobic rice and resource use efficiencies
Designing climate robust cropping systems
As a postdoc I was specifically appointed to support professor Holger Meinke in the development of a new line of research within the group: Designing climate robust cropping systems. This theme is at the interface between crop growth modeling and climate science. We investigate how climate and weather variability impact on crop production and resource use efficiency. We investigate how crop (risk) management can be improved. We investigate better and more relevant ways to use new and enhanced climate information (including climate forecasts). We consider natural resource implications in conjunction with impacts on crop production and quality. We deal with farm-enterprise issues in addition to crop and cropping systems issues.
Education
I am offering the three MSc topics below, contact me if you are interested:
- Extreme weather and climate events and their impact on crop production
Weather and climate knowledge for improved in-season decision-making
Optimising the weather

Career
1995 - 2001 MSc tropical land use, specialisation in plant production systems and geographical information science
2001 - 2005 PhD “Spatial data quality: from description to application” with prof. A.K. Bregt, prof A. Stein and dr. S. de Bruin
2006 - 2008 postdoc “Spatial data Infrastructures”
2008 - 2012 postdoc “Designing climate robust cropping systems”
During my very interdisciplinary MSc study “Tropical Land Use” I specialised in scenarios for land use change depending on varying societal and environmental objectives. As part of my study I developed a background in crop growth modelling, optimisation, land evaluation, and much more. I noted that many of the studies in this field failed to model relevant spatial interactions and failed to investigate error propagation. The PhD position offered by prof. Arnold Bregt offered the chance to study exactly those issues, though less in the domain of plant production systems. During my PhD the focus has always strongly been on bringing issues of data quality back home to the end-users. The end-user focus is turning out to be a red line in my research. In my first postdoc position I waged into completely new areas: internet marketing, social network analysis, standardisation and the debate on funding of public sector information. The idea was always to combine my plant production research line with my spatial research line. My current postdoc position offers this opportunity. I hope to stay here for a while!
